Planning events with short notice can be challenging but Kara Nuismer, catering manager, excels in short notice events at Western Michigan University. Nuismer has been at her position at for three years but has worked at WMU for six.
In office 150 in the Bernhard Center, Nuismer’s organized desk sits across the room from the head-catering chef.
Nuismer, a middle-aged, short-haired woman, begins her workday by checking emails and answering phone calls from people who are interested in having an event at WMU. She plans events for anywhere from 25 to 1,200 people.
Most of the events that Nuismer plans are weddings and business meetings. Some events are planned with only three day’s notice. She prefers when she has a week to plan events for people to have enough time to be properly organized.
She organizes beverage services, cake cutting, decorations, menu selection, linen service and special equipment rental for events. Organization is an important part of event planning and helps her to excel in her position because every customer is seeking something different.
Planning weddings is her favorite part of the job at WMU. Catering Services host around 10 weddings a year in the ballrooms in the Bernhard Center.
