First-generation college students are known to have a low retention rate after their fourth year, according to a 2014 study. But WMU’s TRiO program is helping college students increase graduation rates every year.

WMU student Noelle Gutowski, 20, is a first-generation college student and is also a part of the TRiO program. A conversation with Gutowski provides insight into her struggles, how the TRiO program has helped her, and her determination to graduate from WMU.
